It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

I have seen Lolly Willowes described as satirical and feminist- which is reductive. These terms suggest the book is shrill when it isn't shrill at all. They are the product of lit crit- and lit crit is a disease.

Lit crit is a left-brain project- like philosophy and theology- that attempts to dominate and explain. It always fails because the things it wants to handle, dissect, classify are beyond its understanding. They will always elude it.

It's trying to fix the wind, fix the water, fix the fire, fix the living earth.

Damn the universities that harbour it!

Last weekend I went to the local Embroiderer's Guild annual exhibition. It was much smaller than usual as the venue they regularly use is under renovation. But there were still treasures to find.

i'm writing this post as somebody who's been sitting at the "design manager" title for a few years but as of this past year have effectively been doing.... a bit more.... than that in hopes of snagging that next rung up in the next 2 months. writing this partially as a time capsule for myself, as well as maybe shedding some light on what it's like at this crossroad for others.

1) Your Perception Of Time Is, In Fact, Warped is an insightful essay about why "Everyone from Boomers to Zoomers is mystified at how the passage of time has sped up, and feels disoriented by the strange velocity that’s colored how we’re living through the 2020s." ( Read more... )

2) My prep for the Ohio trip continues, with most of the places responding to confirm dates and times, some more easily than others. Two remain unanswered despite my making several calls. One clearly uses an AI system which twice told me it was forwarding my confirmation request only for no response to come and, today, a message from it prompting me to call again. ( Read more... )

3) I also had to get a new phone, which seems like a model example of enshittification. ( Read more... )

4) However this new phone is lacking so many things my old phone came with -- worst of all, no Fitbit app. ( Read more... )

pros of being in a server full of geopolitical wonks: able to ask congress critters candid questions. suspiciously well connected dank glowie shitposts. ("better HUMINT than some actual countries" suspicious). probably the one place i still feel like you can seriously/semi-anonymously debate with no hurt feelings/much like the chans of old. for somebody who likes to sit in a room full of people much smarter than myself and learn from them, paradise.

cons of being in a server full of geopolitical wonks
: occasionally have to remind them the average american struggles to remember the founding date of the country much less isn't going to be able to plot out the legal/geopolitical ramifications of a coup vs assassination.  very this one xkcd :p

I am feeling stuck a great deal.  We are dealing with Yet Another Cancer foo with the husbeast.  He's survived melanoma the first time, prostate cancer, and now melanoma 2.0 Return of the Bugaboo is trying to murder him.  We cannot plan anything thanks to chemo, since he is on a rigid schedule of when he can eat around when he has to take the poison, and crowds are not recommended.

We have hit important anniversaries (20, and then 25 years) with no real ability to celebrate.  The first, thanks to Covid, and this second milestone thanks to cancer.

I fucking hate cancer.

I hate being stuck.  I hate turning down opportunities because I can't risk getting sick and getting him sick.  I am INCREDIBLY fortunate in that I can work from home-- but twice this year, I've been invited to work-related events that would be SO GOOD for my career and I've had to say no.  I can't risk bringing an illness home.

The last time he got sick while on this chemo, he ended up in the hospital.  I won't risk his health just for a gold star on my work calendar.

But that doesn't make it FEEL any better.  I know I'm doing all the right things for the long term.  But there are things I want to do and... well...

The biggest:  I'm graduating next spring.  20-some odd years late, but I'm finally getting my bachelor's degree.  And I SO SO SO want to throw a big party.  I want to celebrate.  It's late, but damn if it's not better late than never.  I am proud.  And we have missed so many celebrations.

Whether it'll be able to happen will greatly depend on the next few months.  Until then, I'm stuck.  Can't plan until we know how his health is going to be.

But oh, I can hope.  And I am hoping-- and studying!-- my ass off.  Here's to finally getting that long-awaited diploma.  And maybe even having the party to celebrate it.

Wish me luck!

1. Dear Eric: After college, I moved to Chicago even though my parents wanted me to move back home. They live in a suburb outside of Indianapolis. It’s fine for them but I wanted better career prospects and a social life that was different from what I had growing up.

I’m really happy here. It’s been five years and I don’t see any reason to move back.

Recently, I joined my parents on vacation at the lake, and they had what felt like an intervention for me. They and my aunt and uncle basically ambushed me at dinner and pointed out all these things that had changed about me. Each one of these things was an indication I was “losing myself.” Some of them were so silly, like I was letting my facial hair grow out and I once talked about a friend of mine and used “they” to refer to them (because they are non-binary).

They ended the meal by saying I had a lot to think about. I don’t really know what to do with this.

2. Dear Eric: I do ballroom dance and we dance with many different partners throughout the evening. There is one gentleman that I dance with who likes to tell corny jokes. One of us will ask the other to dance, then he will invariably tell a corny joke or two before we begin dancing.

His latest was “What do attorneys wear to court? Lawsuits.” Corny.

I don’t find the jokes funny, or even clever. I’m not sure why he tells me the jokes. I usually just smile or groan. I have never laughed or encouraged more.

I thought he would recognize that I wasn’t enjoying them and stop, but that hasn’t happened. He seems oblivious to the fact. I’m sure he’s this way with all the women that he dances with, not just me. I assume he’s this way in life.

Is there a kind and polite way to tell this gentleman to stop telling me jokes? Or do I just continue to smile and groan since it seems like this is just the way he is? Why do people tell corny jokes at all? Is it anxiety or some need?

It was the summer of 2005. Or maybe it was 2006. What I do know for sure is that it was post-9/11 and pre-release of the iPhone. And it was definitely summer, the air thick with humidity and grime in that special New York City way.

It was also before I got my first cell phone (a Blackberry, obtained in 2007).

There was a celebration planned for the evening, and I was meeting Jayme outside of K-Mart, by the Cooper Union Cube. I’d talked to her before leaving my apartment to confirm our rendezvous. We were going to pick up some party supplies, likely something whimsical or incongruent, because that’s the sort of thing that amused us.

This was a familiar commute for me; Park Slope to East Village was a trek I made at least weekly for a standing social engagement. So, I was very familiar with the route and easily able to estimate my arrival time, even accounting for possible weekend disruptions of service. When the train pulled up to the Grand Army Plaza platform, I stepped into the blissfully air-conditioned car with relief. In summer I often felt like I was drowning in the subterranean tunnels of the MTA system, where often I could see the moisture in the air.

I sat on the molded plastic seat and enjoyed the gentle rumble and sharp squeal of metal as the train made its way along the route from one island to another. Then we came to a stop, the tunnel dark around us, a shadow of graffiti dimly visible in the gloom. This was also familiar. Perhaps waiting for a train ahead to clear from the next station. I should have brought a book, as my only reading materials were the Doctor Zizmor banner ads plastered above the windows, or the “If you see something, say something” posters that were ubiquitous at the time. I quietly prayed that no one had seen something.

The conductor made an announcement that there was a delay in travel, shortly before the power cut out completely. Things went dim inside the car, and without the air flow, it also got very quiet. Which is when I heard it.

“OW! OW! It hurts!”

The sound was a bit muffled, and coming from… below?

And then more sound, as the other passengers on the train started talking to one another. You see, that was the thing about the city. Most of the time, people politely ignore each other as they go about their business. But this had stopped being the liminal space between one station and the next — and the pretense of our invisible bubbles evaporated.

A middle aged woman who worked as a nurse at Kings County hospital reasoned that it likely wasn’t a jumper this deep in the tunnel. She’d seen some of those before, but this far in, it was likely someone living down here. Her calm demeanor helped to soothe my own horror, as the sounds of the man outside continued. A man suggested that we move to the other end of the car, where the cries might not be so audible. Meanwhile, a different woman was starting to experience the earliest stages of claustrophobia, and we worked to calm her and remind her that we weren’t going to run out of air just because the fans had stopped.

Eventually, we could see the bobbing lights of the first responders approaching. How they extracted the man from between the train car and the tracks is a mystery to me. I didn’t want to know at the time, and still don’t really want to think about it now.

A while after that, the power was restored and the train crawled into the next station, which had been just barely visible on the horizon the entire time. They made everyone disembark. At the time I found this annoying, as we’d already been delayed for so long. In retrospect, I suppose that even if there wasn’t any official investigation needed, the poor conductor was probably feeling really shaken and wouldn’t have wanted to finish their shift after what had happened.

When I finally arrived at my destination, I was relieved to find Jayme still waiting for me. And when I explained to her that the delay was neither construction, nor a suspicious package, but rather a person, her eyes got big as she said “Holy shit.” The rest of my day continued on as planned, just slightly delayed.

I never learned what happened to the man. Here, in my small hometown, anyone who is curious will know the outcome of every fender bender, ATV collision, or person who fell through the ice while snowmobiling. If someone got hit on the traintracks in Maine, it would be in every newspaper and television broadcast around the state. But, in New York, it took a lot more to be newsworthy.

Yesterday, for some weird reason, I got to thinking about my drivers license. It expires next March. I first wondered how soon I could get it renewed. I knew there was a wrinkle but I couldn't remember what it was.

Yep. I can no longer get it renewed online. A couple of years ago, they tossed in a new law just for people over 70. I was over 70 last time but it was before the new law. Now you have to appear in person and you have to take an eye test. And the website is a hot mess. It actually says you cannot just 'drop in' (which I do not believe) and you must have an appointment. The two locations nearest to me have no appointments available (EVER????). The location I had planned on going to did have an appointment - first available? November 20 at 1 pm. WTF???? Boy, I'm glad I did not wait until March to ask. I snagged the appointment.

I have an enhanced license which proves I am a citizen and all I need is a renewal. BUT the hot mess of a website assumes that since I am over 70, I do not have an enhanced license and will need one so will need to prove I am a citizen which is a hot mess all its own. So I got a laundry list of shit I need to gather and bring for the appointment in November. The reality is all I need is my current, unexpired, valid enhanced drivers license and $. I can get a 5 year renewal for $106 or an 8 year renewal for $137. I'll take the 8, Alex. That will carry me until I'm 86. I can live with that. But, probably I should get the appointment to renew that one soon. Just in case.

I gave Gemini and Muse the same assignment yesterday. Gemini botched it. Muse nailed it. The assignment was to create a list of TV shows I follow. I want the episode information so that I can see, at a glance, which I've watched and which I haven't. And I want a chronological list of upcoming airings. Gemini made me do a lot of the work and Muse just did it. Then Muse asked me if I'd like a list every Monday of episodes coming up for the week. Well, sure, that would be very cool. PLUS, Muse is pretty. It organized the data in a way that is lovely to look at. So... while I've spent years now avoiding Facebook, I'm now on my way to solid entrenchment in Meta anyway. Sigh.

People were in Jim across the Hall's apartment yesterday packing up. I suspect they are aiming to be out by the end of the month.

When Myrna was dying, she had two close friends who were extraordinarily kind to me - Jan and Ethel. Jan and her husband, Dick, ended up moving into Timber Ridge and into Myrna's old apartment. Ethel's husband, Gary, played volleyball with me. I ran into them last week and Ethel said 'we need to get together for dinner' and I said yep. And yesterday Ethel texted 'Friday?' Then she invited Dick and Jan, too. So the 5 of us are going to dine on Friday night. Should be fun. They are all just so nice and kind.

4 more baseball games. Tonight. Tomorrow and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon.

Time now to take a hike down to the front desk to pick up the weekly news!

If you're interested in being a Tuesday/Thursday guest host, you can sign up here. Thanks! These are the currently available dates:
ALL OF THE DATES ARE OPEN.

September 21-25 is Lonely Prompts Week.

Thursday’s Theme: Fill as many prompts as you can that are over a year old.

Additional Information: Prompts requested and filled must have been left on or before September 24, 2025.

Please number your fills when leaving more than one in a comment. This helps me when I'm ready to count them up.

To find those elusive Lonely Prompts, you can use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community. Fret not, DW members; we are working on a way to search through old entries for prompts for you! As of right now, the best way to search for a lonely prompt on DW is to search the community’s archive, which can be found [[HERE]].

While the use of LJ's advanced search and DW’s archive are options, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching in the future.

To get things going, a few rules that I ask you all to follow.

1. You can only request five prompts to be filled.
2. You can request no more than three prompts from the same fandom.
3. You can, however, fill as many prompts as you'd like!
4. In the subject line, be sure to say whether this is a request or a fill!
5. You must link back to whatever the prompt is in the community logs (whether filling or requesting it be filled), and, if you're filling the prompt, please complete the fill as a response to the original prompt.
6. If you are filling an "any/any" prompt, please let us know what fandom (or, if original, say so!) you're using for the response.
7. If you filled any lonely prompts earlier this week, this is the place to share them!
8. Finally, we now have a community at AO3. If you have an AO3 account, please post your fills there. More information on how to do this is located at this link.

Our teen visitor has been no trouble at all. She sits quietly, lives through her phone and has been happy to fit in. Yesterday she came with us to Edna and Miriam's and we all sat in the garden and ate cake.

I'm reading Lolly Willowes. It's lapidary- a small thing copiously inlaid with semi-precious stones. Last night I was reading the part where Lolly goes wandering round the Chilterns, exploring her hinterland, and a line leaped up at me and I thought, "I really like that. I need to put it in a post."

So here it is.....

Challenge 315:
LAST OF THEIR KIND
Humans are pretty social, relatively speaking, and we’re not the only ones. From mice to lions, it’s pretty common for various species to need company, whether that’s a single friend or a whole family group. So what happens when there’s no one else left?

Maybe they’re the sole survivor of a town or a city being destroyed, or even a whole country or a whole planet. Maybe the elves are slowly traveling into the west, but this one isn’t ready to leave yet, or can’t. Maybe there’s probably more of their species somewhere, but they’re on the other side of the galaxy, much too far away to ever reach again.

Write a story about the last of something.

BONUS GOAL: Stargazing

If your submission includes stars, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge ends Monday, September 28 at 9:00PM EST.
• Post submissions as new entries using the template in the profile
• Tag this week's entries as: [#] submission, 315 – last of their kind
• If you have questions about this challenge, please ask them here

taking my laptop to microcenter (the nerd's best buy) this week since a weird sudden increase in the fans probably means dried thermal paste and/or dust buildup is an easy low-hanging fruit to pick off (it's 4 years old, it wouldn't surprise me, and even if it doesn't solve that it wouldn't hurt longevity).

i can't wait to see the look on the tech's face when a Gurl(tm) shoves a linux laptop under his nose and show him the psensor temp recordings :D

(technically i know replacing thermal paste is ez but i'm honestly at the point i'd rather throw money at somebody to do it right while i'm wandering around and drooling at the shit in microcenter)
